Just For Laughs Returns to Sydney (alic)

Yep, we love a daggy dad joke as much as the next person (“man walks into a bar” gags are traded like a commodity by the coffee machine) but drop one in a comedy club and you could end up all deer-in-the-headlights, upstaged by the heckling of drunken yobbos, or worse still, met with sympathetic forced laugher from those who can’t avoid eye contact in the front row. That’s why we’re leaving the LOL-inducing witticisms to the professionals, when a whole gaggle of them head to the Sydney Opera House for the second ever Just For Laughs comedy gala.

Packing their bags and punchlines for Just For Laughs this October is a selection of the finest local and international comedians around, including Who’s Line Is It Anyway? host and ‘90s nostalgia card Drew Carey, Flight of the Conchords’ ginger manager and NZ funny man Rhys Darby, absurdist mastermind behind the Mighty Boosh, Mr. Noel Fielding, and Breaking Bad’s Bill Burr. There are also local laugh inducers Adam Hills and Sam Simmons on the lineup that stretches from August 18-20.

Now in its second year, we’re really hoping Just For Laughs becomes a regular event we can pencil into our diaries. Our tickle bones are still recovering from last year’s lineup of Dylan Moran, Margaret Cho, Louis C.K. and the godfather of slapstick himself, John Cleese, amongst others.

Now for the $$$ deets: there are pick’n’mix packs available from the Sydney Opera House website which offer three events for the price of two (with a choice of Bill Burr, Sam Simmons, Amp’d and the Nasty Show). This will save you 40 clams. Otherwise, all shows, prices and times can be found here and snapped up from 9am, Monday 20 August.
